STATEMENT
‘All works of art whose function it is to express the soul and emotions are always so ugly as to be beautiful and so beautiful as to be ugly. That is the law.’ (The Magic Mountain, Thomas Mann)
Based on appearance the most significant guide to identification for the large majority of humanity is the face. It should disclose all expressive animation or remain a mask, but whether it seeks to convey a message, be it tranquillity through to turmoil, will remain a question of hermeneutics, of interpreting the look.
In portraiture the lines must vibrate: the colours leap: the expressions resonate authority. There must be no tarrying in the school of lifeless competence— life must be apparent. Ecstasy flies: mediocrity shuffles.
Portraiture is a contact sport, not physical but psychic. It does not dither long with superficial exteriors, but hurries to excavate the subconscious.

Master Class Training
During June 2003 I was instructed under the master printer Stanley Jones D (Lit) at the Chilford-Curwen Studios near Cambridge, England. Peter Chase also instructed me from 1996-2001 (Formerly Head of Printmaking Bournemouth and Poole College of Art) at his Southampton studio. Peter Chase was an assistant to Stanley Jones for several years at the Slade School of Art.
Achievements
Presented exhibition at Solent University Conference June 2005. Presented delegate paper on Cindy Sherman at Hull University Conference ‘Images into Identity’ September 2000.
